Strategic Move In Chip Production

Turkey made a strategic move towards the chip industry, which is experiencing a global crisis in its production. The Ministry of Industry and Technology launched an Integrated Circuit Design Call for the development of domestic and national chip design solutions. With the call, chip designers will be matched with large companies. The deadline to apply for support with a budget of 270 million TL is July 31.
Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank stated that with this call, they will bring together large companies that need chips and small companies that make chip design, namely SMEs, and said, “In this way, our big manufacturers will start using these locally and nationally designed chips. Thus, the ecosystem will develop further, Turkey’s. ‘s presence in the world in value-added areas will come to the fore.
CALL FOR INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DESIGN
In the world where approximately 1 trillion chips are produced every year, the need for chips is increasing in parallel with the increasing use of electronic devices in daily life. The Ministry of Industry and Technology also aims to increase the chip capacity of Turkey, to develop the ecosystem and to spread the integrated circuit design capability throughout the country. “Pre-Competitive Collaboration Projects – Call for Integrated Circuit Design Projects” made.
SCOPE OF SUPPORT
At least one user who will use the product that will emerge within the scope of the call and at least one designer company that designs the chip will come together. Product and commercialization-oriented design projects resulting from this collaboration will be supported. The call will primarily support projects in the electrical and electronics industry, automation and digital transformation technologies and mobility technologies. Thus, added value will be increased in these areas and chips whose intellectual property rights belong to Turkey will start to be used in products.
50 PERCENT GRANT
With the call, 50 percent grant support will be provided for each of the eligible support items in the project. In addition to the current support items, IP blocks license purchase, technical training and consultancy services, prototype (fabrication) production and software license fees will also be partially covered.
Minister Varank, who also made statements about the chip production facility in TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus, said:
ECOSYSTEM WILL DEVELOP: We are opening a call for Pre-Competitive Cooperation Projects under the leadership of our Ministry. With this call with a budget of 270 million liras, we will bring together large companies that need chips and small companies and SMEs that design chips. We will support the development of domestic chip design solutions. In this way, our large manufacturers will start using these locally and nationally designed chips. Thus, the ecosystem will develop further, and Turkey's presence in the world in value-added areas will come to the fore.
WE CAN PRODUCE IN TURKEY
Minister Varank, who also made statements about the chip production facility in TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus, said: “I have Turkey’s first national processor Pebble. This is a 65-nanometer processor. Our engineers designed it locally and nationally, but we could only manufacture it in Malaysia. Now we can produce the chips we designed in Turkey.” he said.
UNIQUE DESIGN CHIPS
Production will start within 18 months at the facility, which has been invested in order to produce chips to be used in high value-added products in Turkey and to increase the current production capacity. With the production of the facility, which has a clean area of 2 thousand square meters, it will be possible to commercialize the original design chips in the domestic and foreign markets. Thus, Turkey will have the necessary infrastructure to be among the global countries in chip production.
